Capernaum

Young Life Capernaum gives teenagers with intellectual and developmental disabilities the chance to experience fun and adventure, to develop fulfilling friendships and to challenge their limits while building self-esteem through club, camp and other enriching activities. Young Life staff and volunteers model Christ’s unconditional love and acceptance as they walk alongside their friends with disabilities, so that the love God has for them becomes tangible in each of their lives.
What does Young Life Capernaum Club look like?
Capernaum Club gives teens with disabilities a chance to have fun and build relationships with one another and with leaders!  It is often referred to as a party with a purpose, because we always have a great time together while giving our teenage friends a chance to learn more about Jesus and His love for them!  Club involves eating together, singing, dancing, playing crazy games, and hearing a message about Jesus.  Capernaum Club meets on Thursday nights twice per month on the Upper West Side.

What is Capernaum Camp?
At camp, Capernaum gives young people with disabilities an atmosphere of high adventure with one-on-one attention from a leader. Set in the scenery of God’s amazing creation, our Capernaum friends experience a week filled with excitement, fun, new opportunities and the message of Jesus Christ and His unconditional love for them. Teens and their leaders get to participate in activities like zip-lining, mountain climbing and swimming, just to name a few.  It is a truly amazing week!

Who are Capernaum Leaders?
Young Life Capernaum leaders are Christian adults and college age students that are in a healthy, growing relationship with Christ.  They actively initiate and develop relationships with our friends with disabilities by going out into the city to meet teens with disabilities right where they are at by caring about them and letting them know they are loved by Jesus. This is called contact work. Leaders go through a wonderful Young Life training called QUEST to learn about the ministry as well as a Capernaum training to learn more about serving teens with disabilities.  In addition to doing contact work, they attend club and camp with our teenage friends and participate in regular leader meetings.

What is a Capernaum Buddy?
Young Life Capernaum buddies are high school teens that attend club to help our teenage friends with disabilities participate fully in club activities.  They develop relationships with our friends with disabilities at club as well as camp.
